Although this island of the archipel of Mascareignes (Mauritius, Reunion, Rodrigues) was seen by the Moors in the XIV century, the first navigators to put feet on it were the Portugueses. But the French colonizators claimed Reunion where as the firsts settlers were French "bagnards" who survived happily for three years in this bountyful environment.
The French departementization has done really good here were roads are well maintained in spite of the humid climate, joining the international airport of Roland Garros in the capital StDenis, the Port, and the airport of St Pierre.
Also, buildings are not higher than four stories, theorically the heigth of a coconut tree, and the numerous beaches are very accessible, although there are some traffic around the only coastal road to which the future fast Road of the Tamarins will help to discongest on the West coast.
